Officially known as the Democratic Republic of Congo, this large African country, the second largest on the continent, is located in the equatorial region and borders the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Angola and the Republic of Congo.The country only has 40 km of Atlantic Ocean coastline and its capital, Kinshasa, is located on the banks of the Congo River.Congo gained independence from Belgium in 1960 and was known as the Belgian Congo until then. A few years later, under the dictatorship of Mobutu Sese Seko, it was renamed Zaire.Two-thirds of the country are covered by dense equatorial rainforest that hides some of the world’s most unique animal species, including the bonobo and okapi primates, two large mammals discovered in the 20th century.The Virunga Mountains National Park is renowned for its wilderness, home to several families of mountain gorillas, as well as for the active Nyiragongo volcano, with its reddish lava caldera that is constantly bubbling. Lake Kivu or the mythical Congo River, one of the largest in the world and the scene of some of the most exciting stories in the history of 19th century exploration.To travel to Democratic Republic of Congo is to enter its frenetic capital, Kinshasa, full of life and activity, where the Sapeurs live, whose elegance and lifestyle stand out from the rest of the Congolese people. It is also to get to know Kisangani with its famous Wegenia fishermen or natural wonders such as the one formed by the Congo River at its mouth.

The DRC can be visited throughout the year, although, depending on the area, some months will be more advisable than others because of the rains. For example, from December to March is the dry season in the north, so this is a good time to visit there. Between April and October the south is usually free of rain.

Sanidad - Vacunas

The international yellow fever vaccine booklet is mandatory, and others such as those for Hepatitis A and B. Rift Valley advises travellers to consult with international vaccination centres before travelling.


It is mandatory to obtain a visa to enter the DRC. It may be obtained at the country's embassy in Madrid. The passport must be valid for at least six months.


The local currency is the Congolese franc. Some euro payments are permitted, though the most widely used currency, besides the local one, is the dollar. It is advisable to bring dollars, as long as they were issued in the year 1996 or later. Credit cards are accepted at different tourist establishments in the big cities, especially in the capital, Kinshasa.
